Question: Would birds prefer expensive bird seed over cheap bird seed?
Hypothesis: I think birds would like cheap bird seed better than expensive bird seed because it's like mcdonalds to a bird. It might be more flavorful and less healthy for the bird.
Set up: I would put two identical bird feeders beside each other and put cheap seed in one and expensive in the other. Then I would wait for a week and watch to see which one attracted the most birds. I put up two small red bird feeders right in front of my house in the front lawn. I hung them on a tree right next to each other. The one on the left has cheap seed and the one on the right has expensive bird seed. It has been about a week since I put them up. I have seen no birds.
Data: I have seen about ten birds now. It has been two weeks since I put up the feeders. Some of the birds eat a little bit of the expensive seed but they seem to like the cheap seed more. There is a noticeable difference in the amount of bird seed in the cheap feeder. I started off with ten inches of seed in each feeder. Now there are eight inches left of the expensive seed and six inches left of the cheap seed.
Research: I couldn't find a whole lot of information on what kind of seed birds will like. I did find some on why I haven't seen that many birds around. I looked online and it said that birds are starting to migrate so that may be why I haven't seen a lot of birds. My neighbor has about nine cats and my research shows that cats eat a lot of the birds. So that is a reason why I see few birds. Another reason is that the bird feeders might be in a place where not a lot of birds go. The feeders might be too hidden. My last reason is that we have two very loud hound dogs. They are always at the window looking for stuff to bark at. The loud barking of dogs probably scares the birds away from our feeders.
